The Hidden Language of AI: Beyond "Just Try It"
Hidden commands not told to every non-tech users
Last week, I shared my "Shift+Enter moment" -, how a simple keyboard command transformed my AI interactions. These small but crucial discoveries are often buried in tech documentation, hidden from everyday users. And now, with OpenAI's recent 4.0 model update prioritizing task execution, understanding these hidden commands has become even more critical.
The Weight of Words in AI
A common misconception in AI education is the "just try it" approach. Tech leaders often say, "Just talk to it, you'll figure it out." But here's what they don't tell you: AI doesn't make decisions like humans do. It works with weights and alignments. Think of it like a balancing scale, where certain phrases and commands carry more weight than others.
A Tale of Two Prompts
Let me show you what I mean:
Prompt 1: "I need help with planning my morning routine." Result: Generic, task-focused suggestions prioritizing repeatability.
Prompt 2: "With precision, clarity, and guidance, I need help with planning my morning routine." Result: "This first step ensures the routine is aligned with your actual goals, not just habits for the sake of structure."
The difference? The second prompt creates alignment with personal values and intentionality, not just task completion.
The Parallel Journey
We're witnessing a fascinating parallel in higher education: Students and faculty have become peers in navigating AI literacy. Neither group has proper guidance, yet both are expected to use these tools effectively. This gap between expectation and education puts our students at risk of entering the workforce unprepared.
The #60WattsOfClarity Challenge
This week, I invite you to join the Hidden Language Challenge:
Choose an intention you want to practice
First, ask AI a straightforward question
Then, try again with intentional command phrases
Compare the differences in responses
Example:
Basic: "Write me an email to my students about this upcoming assignment."
Enhanced: "Act as a professor in a [subject] class. You are tasked to compose a 200 word email to your students about an upcoming assignment."
Your Journey to AI Literacy
If this resonates with you, you're not alone. My own struggles with AI literacy led me to create the AI Faculty Lounge. It is he first platform offering access to 6 specialized AI "agents" designed specifically for higher education. We're currently in beta, and I'll be holding weekly office hours starting in two weeks to guide you through the platform.
